Twelfth Grade Play: Under Milk Wood

Tuesday, Jun 6 and Wednesday Jun 7 - 7:00pm

The 12th Grade Class of 2017 Presents:

“Under Milk Wood” by Dylan Thomas

Directed by Leila Allen and Aidan O’Reilly

Tuesday, June 6th and Wednesday, June 7th at 7:00PM in Sophia Hall

To begin at the beginning:

It is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black, the cobblestreets silent and the hunched, courters'and rabbits' wood limping invisible down to the sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack, fishingboatbobbing sea. The houses are blind as moles (though moles see fine to-night in the snouting, velvet dingles) or blind as Captain Cat there in the muffled middle by the pump and the town clock, the shops in mourning, the Welfare Hall in widows' weeds. And all the people of the lulled and dumbfound town are sleeping now.

This lyrical, fast moving, poetical play for voices was Thomas’ last and incomplete work. It is a glimpse into a day in a small, imagined, Welsh sea village in the 1950’s. Narrators lead the audience through the day from the people’s dreams through the bustle of the afternoon and back to sleep. It is a play about everything and nothing. Dylan Thomas is said to have stated in a letter that, "Under Milk Wood" was written in response to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, as a way of reasserting the evidence of beauty in the world. We hope you’ll come enjoy it with us! –Leila Allen
