Green News 2009-2010
In 1980, the school purchased a 32-acre horse farm, which is our current location. From the beginning, there was an intention to have a working Biodynamic farm as part of the school initiative. Through enthusiastic volunteer efforts, an exemplary farm staff, and with donor support, we are achieving our goals. The following chart maps plans for the current school year.

Sustainability and Stewardship
The Board of Directors of SWSF has formed an ad hoc committee, the Sustainability Committee, whose mission it is to develop an environmental policy and an environmental management program for the school. An envrionmental policy and management program will make it easier for our Development Department to get grant money, and prioritize projects for the school to undertake.
In addition, Faculty and staff will be undertaking a study to help familiarize themselves with strategies available for greening the campus and transforming the school into a model sustainable community. To help with that study, a Summerfield family has generously donated 100 copies of Smart By Nature, by Micheal Stone and the Center for Ecoliteracy, for all of the faculty and staff to read.
Summerfield is already engaged in many sustainable practices, but we too can improve, and need to prepare for the environmental challenges of the coming decades. For more information on Smart by Nature, or the Center for Ecoliteracy, please visit their website at http://www.ecoliteracy.org/.
