School Canceled for All of Next Week: Mon 10/16 - Fri 10/22

Dear Summerfield community,

Due to the ongoing fires and hazardous conditions in our area, Summerfield will be closed all of next week, with the goal of reopening on Monday, October 23 if it is safe to do so.

The Governance Council and the Board Executive members met this morning, and decided that due to the poor air quality in the area and the uncertainty of when gas will safely be turned back on at the school, it is clear that the campus needs to stay closed. Our classrooms all open directly to the outside, and do not have filtered air, so air quality is compromised indoors as well as out. We are unanimous that this decision is in the best interest of the children, staff and faculty and families.

Many in our school community are dealing with relocation and uncertainty, high stress levels and trauma. We will be holding a faculty and staff in-service before school recommences to prepare for receiving the students in this unprecedented situation. Before the children return to school, we also want to ensure the classrooms are professionally cleaned to ensure toxins from ash are minimized.

All classes, sports events, parent education events and meetings scheduled this week have been cancelled. The campus will be closed and the gates locked for the week.

Our donation drive tomorrow, Sunday from 9am-2pm, is relocated to Sebastopol Independent Charter School, 200 South Main Street, Sebastopol (downtown) in their Assembly Room. They will open their gates for drop off. Parking will be available on the street or surrounding public lots.

Our High School Open House, scheduled for next Saturday October 21, is rescheduled for Saturday December 9.

We encourage all families to reach out to one another this week to organize gatherings, activities and service work appropriate for each age group. We are compiling a list of volunteer ideas and parent resources and will publish that in a special edition of the mini-messenger on Monday.

Again, if there is any way we can support you and your family during this difficult time, please reach out. We have so many who want to help. Long-term housing is still our biggest need, with Andrea Jolicoeur coordinating, andreajoli(at)summerfieldwaldorforg.

With warmest wishes for all our health and well-being,

Governance Council
